Supplies needed:

  • 2 ¼” x 3 ¼” black tin box with lid

  • 4”x 4” striped paper cut to fit inside of box at 2 3/8” x 3 3/8”

  • 8” square white card stock to print cut files on

  • JWCF 469 books one more chapter  and JWCF 470 books on a shelf pic cut files

  • Acrylic paint – colors blue, silver, bronze, copper and black

  • Alcohol ink markers to color cut file image

  • Old paint brushes – different sizes and 1 small thin line brush

  • 1 ¾” x 1 ½” mini books – three of them or any other treasure you want to put inside the box. You can make the books yourself or buy them.

  • 5 metal cogs in different sizes - painted with acrylic paint

  • Wet glue

  • White gel paint pen

  • Permanent marker with a fine nib – color black used with universal pen holder to draw the cut file

  • Brother Scan N Cut machine

  • Universal pen holder

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Use the Scan N Cut machine and the digital cut file JWCF 469 books one more chapter and JWCF 470 books on a shelf pic.

  2. Place a black fine nib permanent marker into the universal holder for the Scan N Cut machine.

  3. Use the draw option to draw the books on a shelf pic cut file image on to the white card stock. The cut files will need to be made smaller to fit inside the box. They should be approximately 2¾”wide x 1½”high. Measure your box to make sure the images will fit.

  4. Fussy-cut the image of the books on a shelf pic file into two pieces. One piece with two books and one piece with three books.

  5. Use the draw option to draw books one more chapter cut file image on to the striped paper. Make sure that the stripes run horizontal to the image.

  6. Cut the image of books one more chapter to a size to fit inside the box at 2 3/8” x 3 3/8 with rounded corners.

  7. Color each piece of paper with alcohol inks to give dimension and interest.

  8. Use the white gel pen to color inside of the words to make them stand out.

  9. Set these pieces aside – these will be glued in place after the box is dried.

  10. Start with an old brush loaded with silver acrylic paint and randomly apply paint onto the black tin box. Do both inside and outside of the box. You don’t need a lot of paint. Be sure to leave open spots for other layers of color.

  11. Next place successive layers of blue, copper, bronze and black to create a layered effect. Use a fine line brush to create cracks. Your piece should look similar to these pictures.

  12. You do not need to paint the bottom inside of the box because you will be placing the striped paper there.

  13. When paint is thoroughly dried, glue the striped paper to the bottom of the deeper side of the box. Be sure to place it in a direction that can be read when the lid is open and the hinge is away from you.

  14. Now glue the other two pieces to the inside of the box lid. It should look like this picture.

  15. Use the metal cogs to decorate the outside lid of the box. Use glue to place them onto the tin.

  16. Now place your mini books inside of your treasure box.

  17. Just a quick note about the books – if you make them yourself, here are a few pictures with a Copic marker for reference to show the scale. I made three of them that fit nicely inside the box.

This little tin box makes a perfect gift for the book lovers in your life.
